Album Review: Steely Dan's fourth album, Katy Lied, finds them simultaneous searching for more meaning in their songs but not willing to give up the tongue-in-cheek pop craft that marked their first three albums. "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" is an example of the latter style, as are the quirky "Rose Darling" and "Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More." Even the great opening track, "Black Friday," refuses to treat its rather serious subject with a straight face. But Steely Dan does indeed start embedding more serious messages into its work here, beginning with the aching and mysterious "Doctor Wu." It continues on "Any World (That I'm Welcome To),"
a song about the complete frustration we often feel with the modern world. Several other songs on Katy Lied find Steely Dan at the top of their game, including, "Bad Sneakers," a laid-back song about living in the metropolis, and "Chain Lightning," which practically shimmers with its high production values. So, while you're out at the movies, pick up a copy of Katy Lied. It gets two hums up!
