Album Review: Deep Purple is one of the few bands that has managed to successfully combine progressive rock with a heavy dose of metal. In this case, there's a healthy helping of spaciness and blues rock too. It all combines to give us one of Deep Purple's best albums,
and certainly one of their most accessible works. There were two humongous hits on the album: "Highway Star" was one; the other was "Smoke on the Water," an anthem that perfectly captures the feel and sound of the heavy progressive scene in the early 1970s.
The remaining songs are all just as memorable in their own right, not so much for their lyrics, which don't exactly break any ground in the deep-thinking department, but for their energetic, fat sound, and the album's superb production values. If you were to ever
get the chance to actually go "Space Truckin'," this is one of the albums you'd want along for the ride.
