CATEGORY:  PEAK OIL, COLLAPSE — 29.SEP.2014

Rating: 4 of 5 - Very good Radio EcoShock

Taking Odds on Global Collapse — If you are wondering how long this high-consumption civilization can keep going, you are not alone. It's not just counter-culture types either. A small parade of billionaires have recently appeared on the financial blog Zero Hedge, predicting a shattering financial crash. But seldom do we find academics asking whether global collapse is imminent. A new research paper by Graham M. Turner takes another stab at the "Limits to Growth" angle and, as with the original paper by that name, concludes that the current civilizational trajectory will indeed fail, and that energy constraints will be the main reason.

CATEGORY:  ENERGY — 23.SEP.2014

Rating: 4 of 5 - Very good The Keiser Report

From Fracking Utopia to Cold, Hungry, and in the Dark — Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the increasing desperation in people's actions to acquire resources, from rich desert dwellers buying water to keep their plants green in a drought, to the natural gas industry running fracking wells at a loss. However, despite the obvious evidence of our unsustainable path, it appears very few are willing to leave behind all that they believe. ~~ In the second half, Max interviews Bill Powers, author of Cold, Hungry and in the Dark: Exploding the Natural Gas Supply Myth. Powers talks about some of the troublesome fundamentals in the natural gas industry and explains how cheap-money policies are fueling the boom, not an abundance of the resource. He says all the elements are there for a repeat of a 1970s-style energy crisis.

Original Show Pub Date: 20.Sep.2014

CATEGORY:  COLLAPSE — 11.SEP.2014

Rating: 3 of 5 - Good, worth a listen Agroinnovations Podcast

Living Life as Collapse Proceeds — Host Frank Aragona and KMO of the C-Realm Podcast discuss a variety of issues, including.... collapse and one's personal posture towards it; the politics of poverty; the dominance of profit over service in corporate culture; permaculture as an outlet that deflates pushback.

GP comment:  At one point KMO despairs that there is very little we can do that truly has an impact on fixing the massive problems of modern civilization. Gandhi agreed, but reminded us that it is very important that we do what we can, regardless.

Energy Crossroads: A Burning Need to Change Course
(2007) (Documentary)

DESCRIPTION: America consumes 25% of the world's energy, 85% of which comes from non-renewable fossil fuels. Whether from a climate-change or peak-oil perspective, our energy consumption is a problem. Energy Crossroads examines the situation and offers concrete solutions for those who want to educate themselves. The film features passionate individuals, entrepreneurs, experts and scientists at the forefront of their fields, bringing legitimacy and expertise to the film's core message.

Fuel (2008) (Documentary)

DESCRIPTION: High oil prices, global warming, and an insatiable demand for energy—these issues will be the catalyst for heated debates and positive change for many years to come. Fuel exposes the shocking connections between the auto industry, the oil industry, and the government, while exploring alternative energies such as solar, wind, electricity and non-food-based biofuels. The film covers the pros and cons of biofuels, how America's addiction to oil is destroying the US economy, and how green energy can save us—but only if we act now.

There Will Be Blood (2007) (Documentary)

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Barry Del Sherman, Dillon Freasier

DESCRIPTION: A sprawling epic of family, faith, power and oil, There Will Be Blood is set on the incendiary frontier of California's turn-of-the-century petroleum boom.   book cover for Crude World, by Peter Maass, 8/10/2010

The Violent Twilight of Oil

Peter Maass examines the social, political, and environmental impact of petroleum on the countries that produce it. Every unhappy oil-producing nation is unhappy in its own way, but all are touched by the "resource curse"—the power of oil to exacerbate existing problems and create new ones. From Saudi Arabia to Equatorial Guinea, from Venezuela to Iraq, the stories of rebels, royalty, middlemen, environmentalists, indigenous activists, and CEOs come together in this account of the consequences of our addiction to oil.

book cover for Uranium, by Tom Zoellner, 3/5/2009

War, Energy, and the Rock That Shaped the World

Marie Curie gave us hope that uranium would be a miracle panacea, but the Manhattan Project gave us reason to believe that civilization would end with apocalypse. Fortunes have been made from this yellow dirt; massive energy grids have been run from it. Fear of it panicked the American people into supporting a questionable war with Iraq and its specter threatens to create another conflict in Iran. Now, some are hoping it can help avoid a global warming catastrophe.

book cover for Renewable Energy Made Easy, by David Craddock, 8/18/2008

Renewable Energy Made Easy will provide you with everything you need to know about alternative energy sources like solar, wind, wave and tide, ethanol and other biofuels, geothermal, and hydrogen. The author considers the availability, cost, aesthetics, and environmental considerations for each of these technologies—all in jargon-free and easy-to-understand language.

QUOTES
. . . about Energy, Fossil Fuels, Alternative Energy, Renewable Energy

"We are witnessing the beginning of one of the great tragedies of history. The United States, in a misguided effort to reduce its oil insecurity by converting grain into fuel for cars, is generating global food insecurity on a scale never seen before."

Lester Brown, author of Plan B 4.:  Mobilizing to Save Civilization

"When plants die, they're recycled into basic elements [by the biota in the soil] and become a part of new plants. It's a closed cycle. There is no bio-waste."

Alice Friedemann, from the article, Peak Soil: Why Cellulosic Ethanol, Biofuels Are Unsustainable and a Threat to America

"First, there is the power of the Wind, constantly exerted over the globe.... Here is an almost incalculable power at our disposal, yet how trifling the use we make of it! It only serves to turn a few mills, blow a few vessels across the ocean, and a few trivial ends besides. What a poor compliment do we pay to our indefatigable and energetic servant!"

Henry David Thoreau, from Paradise (To Be) Regained [1843]

"The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun."

Ralph Nader
