PEAK OIL AND CLIMATE CHANGE VIDEOS ...
Confronting Change
There are numerous threats to our ability to continue business as usual. The recent Confronting Change conference reviewed two that loom large—climate change and peak oil. Presentations include...
- Polly Higgins—Climate Change Conferences and Ecocide — Higgins notes the flagging interest in global climate conferences and climate action in general, as well as the increasing belief in false solutions. She proposes that willful worsening of climate change be considered ecocide and that government and corporate leaders be held accountable in a crimes-against-humanity sense.
- Michael Meacher—Peak Oil, Powerful Interests, and Vast Potentials — Meacher says the three drivers for all decision are what will best benefit the powerful finance, armaments, and fossil-fuel sectors. How do we force the people in charge to start making better decisions? In terms of peak oil transition, he sees a period of expanded use of natural gas and distillates, but ultimately we must tap the vast potential of renewables and transition to a new style of society.
- Rob Hopkins—Reengineering the Party — Hopkins thinks that rather than taking the punchbowl away from the current party—to the disappointment of the planet's stakeholders/partygoers—he seeks to provide a new type of punch bowl and new concept for the party. More carrot cake, less sticky post-party mess.
