Album Review: Whether you're old enough to remember the 1970s video game "Space Invaders" or not, you're still young enough to appreciate the debut album from The Pretenders. Chrissie Hinde and company came onto the post-punk scene with a mix of growl and cool that gave them instant success. The combination of melody and backbeat combined with Hynde's sultry vocals gives songs like "Mystery Achievement" and "Stop Your Sobbing" a sound that was unique then—and still is today. When Hynde's voice breaks on a song like "Kid," we fall hard for the storyline. The album also contains the Pretenders' first hit, "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special)," a prototypical song for the band that would set the tone for them for the next two decades. There were more great albums to come from The Pretenders, but this is where it all started.
