picture of book cover - Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance David McNally:  The Global Slump—A Call to Action — 21 Jan 2011 — McNally reviews the rise of speculative capitalism, the fall of the worker class, the political and economic challenges we face today, and the need for active resistance to address the situation. He correctly observes that the coming Age of Austerity will be used by the elites to get the global public to pay for the $20 trillion or so in largess that was bequeathed to the elites via their cash cows, the big banks.  (This is a very good analysis. --GP)

James Howard Kunstler on Peak Oil(On the Edge, Press TV) — 29 Jan 2011 — JHK and Max review many of the basic concepts of peak oil—including "peak oil does not mean running out of oil" and how extraction technologies increase ultimate decline rates—but they also discuss some advanced concepts like narco-trafficking in Mexico as a replacement for lost oil revenue; the US and UK Ponzi economies as a way of dealing with the decline of oil national supplies; and China and the Monroe doctrine as they relate to the limitations of Canada's tar sands.

She also thinks that even if the electricity supply can be beefed up and the technical issues with electric cars can be worked out, the transition won't happen because the coming deflationary depression will mean the money is not available.

The Grid—First Repair, Then a Brain Transplant — 14 Jan 2011 — A recent article in IEEE Spectrum claims that our electrical grid has been getting less reliable. What can be done to make it better?  (GP comment:  A pretty good overall analysis, but he laughably suggests that a new "public-private partnership" is the solution. Good god, man—that's what we were supposed to get under deregulation. Instead, the shareholders got rich, grid upgrades and maintenance got ignored, and the public got a sub-par grid. It's time to identify the privatization hawkers as the snake-oil salesmen they truly are.)

Do Environmental Regulations Really Kill Jobs? — 21 Jan 2011 — Should the phrase "tough environmental regulations" just be rewritten as "job-killing bureaucratic burden"?
(GP comment:  Perhaps having more red tape is not even the right question. What if we just make the penalties under current regulations far more odious than they are now? If a company flout the law, then zero its shareholders' profits for three years. Or if a company really screws up, then put it out of business. Such penalties are applied to people; why not corporations? The current approach to federal regulatory enforcement often sees a company get fined, say, $5 million when it made $10 million in profits doing the bad thing. The ridiculousness and corrupt collusion of such an arrangement should be obvious to everyone.)

Mountaintop Removal Mine Denied — 21 Jan 2011 — What would have been the largest mountaintop removal coal mine in West Virginia history was denied an EPA permit. This is the first time the EPA has overruled a mining permit issued by the Army Corps of Engineers.  (GP comment:  Here's a good marker for the sociopathic attitude of the coal industry: A study concluded that the coal company could take actions to reduce the miles of buried streams by 50%, at an added cost of only 50 cents/per ton of mined coal. The coal company said that was too much. Jeez.)
