THE GODZILLA COMPLEX
DESPITE FUKUSHIMA FALLOUT, PRO-NUKE PITCHMEN HISS ON

image of Godzilla; feature story is THE GODZILLA COMPLEX - DESPITE FUKUSHIMA FALLOUT, PRO-NUKE PITCHMEN HISS ON Introduction:
More than a month into the Fukushima catastrophe—and with fallout now being detected around the globe—the half-truths and happy-talk about nuclear energy keep a'comin' from the industry and their government front men. You won't find such glowing reviews here—only the scaly, red-eyed truth.

Russia Today

Gunderson:  The Pattern of Government Obfuscation — 13 Apr 2011 — His points include... This is and has been a disaster at least as bad as Chernobyl. Bad information and evacuation delays are similar to government behavior on previous nuclear disasters. Everybody knows when events like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima happen, but who knows when they end?

Democracy Now

Thomas Breuer:  Not Equal to Chernobyl, But Way Worse — 12 Apr 2011 — Breuer notes that unlike Chernobyl, the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is in a densely populated area.
Watch  |  Download/Listen   6:38

Michio Kaku:  Fukushima is a Ticking Time Bomb — 13 Apr 2011 — The Japanese government is trying to calm fears about radiation levels and food safety in the region around the heavily damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility, even as it has raised the severity rating of the crisis to the highest possible level. Physicist Michio Kaku say, "Radiation is continuing to leak out of the reactors. The situation is not stable at all. The slightest disturbance could set off a full-scale meltdown at three nuclear power stations, far beyond what we saw at Chernobyl."

Electric Politics

Arjun Makhijani: Nuclear Irresponsibility — 08 Apr 2011 — In a world where we cannot engineer guaranteed safety and responsible management of dangerous waste products, what role is left for nuclear power? Arjun Makhijani offers a sober assessment of Japan and the future of nuclear energy.

Chris Martenson

The Weird Mix of Gold, Bonds, and Simultaneous Inflation/Deflation — 08 Apr 2011 — Paul Tustain makes a good case for simultaneous inflation/deflation (but with a bias towards high levels of inflation). He also talks about the teetering tower of long bonds, which will (over the next 15 years) be all converted to short term bonds and cash (because of inflation), destabilizing the monetary system. He says that the behavior of the gold market is sending a signal that the monetary system is in grave danger.

Reel Bad Arabs—Sand in the Gears of the Projector — 02 Apr 2011 — This audio adaptation of Jack Shaheen's film Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People reviews Hollywood's painstaking creation and commercial exploitation of anti-Arab images over the second half of the 20th century. The stereotypes have included incompetence and venality; lechery and cruelty; unconscionable and unyielding violence and fanaticism. Fortunately, in the last two decades, more realistic images have started to emerge.

Humanure in Haiti — 08 Apr 2011 — Even before the devastating earthquake, many Haitians "did their business" in unsanitary latrines. Composting toilets are now being installed in a pilot program, eliminating the smell, the danger of pathogens, the water pollution, and in the long run creating a fertilizer that, once made sanitary through the high-temperature composting process, can be applied to crops.  (GP comment:  While most Westerners shrink at the thought of deficating in anything but a flush toilet, a properly built and managed composting toilet is a fine solution that can be integrated into a house at whatever level of aesthetics you desire. I know this from personal experience! --Mark)
